Modeling of biological systems

The modeling of nervous systems is one of the major scientific challenges at present. In the framework of collaborations with French ands foreign groups, the research topics have been:

morphometry, i.e. the investigation of the morphology of the dendritic tree of neurons, whose relationship to the functions of the neurons is a an important research topic; we have shown that, despite the complexity of the dendritic tree, its morphology can be described parsimoniously with a very small number of parameters;
the analysis of electrophysiological data in correlation with molecular genetics data (collaboration with the biology group at ESPCI);
the investigation of the mechanisms of data encoding and processing by neural networks, which is the bulk of our present research effort. These investigations have been performed on the olfactory system (especially that of invertebrates), and the communication system of the electric fish. The integration of anatomical, physiological, and behavioural data, has led us to the design of an analytically tractable model of one of the data processing stages of the olfactory system: given electrophysiological responses recorded in vivo in response to olfactory stimuli, we are able to propose a family of models that can generate these responses; these models can serve as guides for the design of new experiments.
